Deposit Summary
IOCG-type mag/grav target, with drilling identifying variably altered, brecciated, mineralised volcanic rock beneath 870m of cover sediment. Assay results included 53m @ 0.02kg/tU3O8 from 907m.
Deposit Description
VULCAN IOCG, located ~30km north of Olympic Dam. Hole VUD 001 drilled in late-2009 on the NW-margin of a large gravity anomaly ~5km diameter. The hole penetrated >240m of variably altered, brecciated and IOCGU-style mineralised volcanic rocks beneath 870m of cover sediment. Assay results included 53m @ 0.10%Cu, 0.04g/tAu and 0.02kg/tU3O8 from 907m, within which was an intersection of 10m at 0.2% Cu, 0.05g/t Au and 0.047kg/t U3O8 from 936m. Follow-up 8 holes identified IOCGU-(Mo-REE)-style mineralisation consisting predominantly of disseminated and vein pyrite, chalcopyrite, trace molybdenite, with alteration dominantly hematite-sericite-carbonate-tourmaline assemblage, best values in hole VUD 3 with 57m of strong cpy/py mineralisation.
Re-Os data from molybdenite intergrown with chalcopyrite at Vulcan demonstrated that hydrothermal activity and mineralization occurred at 1586 ± 8 Ma. The host granitic protolith dated at Vulcan to 1743 ± 7 Ma may be related to c. 1750–1740 Ma intrusive and extrusive magmatism documented from a number of localities in the eastern Gawler Craton, including the Moonta Porphyry (1748 ± 15 Ma).
